Richland Academy / Academics

We are committed to excellence, which resonates through the work of our students and teachers.  Our rich and challenging curriculum ensures we deliver a solid academic foundation, which is enhanced by our comprehensive Arts programming.

With the majority of our students working a year ahead, the Ontario Curriculum Guidelines and Expectations are not simply met, but are exceeded and enriched through our progressive approach to learning.  To measure our academic excellence we utilize an external measurement of success.  Richland Academy students’ attainment is measured annually, through the Canadian Achievement Test (CAT), with student scores typically two years above the National Average.

As a 21st Century learning community, and the first private Early Years to Grade 8 school in York Region to embrace the Reggio approach to inquiry learning. Our nurturing community offers a sense of belonging for our students, staff and families, and differentiates us from others.  Our child-centered, experiential and intellectually-stimulating environment fosters life-long learning skills and attitudes, where our students and staff feel connected, capable and counted in our community. We support every student in developing the mindset, cognitive and academic skills vital for success by giving them the tools they need to be adaptable, and by instilling in them the ability and desire to love learning.

“Congratulations to Richland for winning best private school. I’m not surprised, Richland was a wonderful experience for my children. I owe it to Richland for all their time management and organization skills. To this day both my kids still have the same color code of binders for each subject like they did at Richland. Thank you all for providing my kids with a wonderful and memorable time at Richland.”

WHAT DO WE DELIVER?

Deeper thinking, confident, world ready children who are equipped to succeed at any top-rated secondary school, and beyond.

HOW DO WE DO THIS?

We do this through the purposeful integration of three key academic elements:

  • a warm and welcoming Reggio-inspired environment
  • an academically rigorous curriculum
  • rich, stimulating, inquiry-based classroom experiences

Warm and welcoming Reggio-inspired environment

You want your children to feel safe, valued, and inspired while at school. And so do we. We do this by welcoming your children at the door every day and by maintaining a beautiful, stimulating environment to foster their learning. Modelled after the award-winning schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy, your children get to learn in beautiful, light-filled spaces with high ceilings, beautiful colours, and inspiring resources.

Academically rigorous curriculum

You want your children to receive the very best education and to be prepared to succeed in the future. And so do we.

We do this by combining the highly-respected Ontario curriculum within the rigorous International Baccalaureate® (IB) framework. The IB framework develops the intellectual, personal, social, and emotional skills children need to thrive in a rapidly globalizing and changing world. All IB schools have to meet high standards of teaching, leadership, and student achievement and are certified by the international IB association.

Rich, stimulating classroom experiences

You want your children to be involved in rich, stimulating classroom experiences that make them want to come to school. And so do we. We do this by delivering our curriculum through the very best inquiry-based learning and assessment practices. In an inquiry-based learning model children learn to craft deep questions about content, investigate those questions, and come to evidence-based conclusions about subject matter. They learn how to learn.

Our Head of School is nationally recognized for her inquiry-based learning expertise and our Ontario-certified teachers are sophisticated practitioners of this approach. Teachers from across the province come to Richland Academy to participate in workshops and professional training in inquiry-based learning.
