The Grade Five students were shown a framed photo and the war medals of an anonymous man.  Their only instructions were to give the man a name and a story…

Much dialogue took place between students as they tried to develop an accurate representation for this individual. Students used their investigative skills to determine when and where this person served, studying his medals and using the ‘field of poppies’ on the locker for information about past wars. Students also used their prior knowledge and imaginations to create a story for the unknown man.

“When we grow up we won’t fight.”

In preparation for the Remembrance Day Assembly, the Senior Kindergarten students talked about why people wear poppies to remember those affected, and still being affected, by wars around our world. As always, we asked what the children knew, and what their thoughts were. Below, a very poignant conversation, that was overheard.

“When we grow up we won’t fight.”

“They (the soldiers) saved the whole world.”

“Their wish did not come true.”

“That’s inappropriate.  The people tried really hard.”
