Investigating Leaves in JK

The JK children’s interest in fall leaves has escalated. During their first Investigative Research session with the SK children, they went searching for colourful and different fall leaves.

Their first task was to really look carefully at the leaves: colour, shape, and type. They then had to choose a ‘favourite’ one that they wanted to sketch in pencil first, and then use their ‘real colours’ to make the leaves ‘look like real ones!’

Here is an example of a beautiful rendition, a sketch then coloured with crayons, paying ever so close attention to each detail.

The SK friends assisted the children with how to sketch with their pencils, how to look carefully at the detail, and how to choose and mix colours, giving pointers such as ‘I think you need more yellow’ or ‘Did you see that your leaf has holes in it?’

Next came the taping of the leaf on the page beside their sketch and the ‘story about the experience’ which was inscribed on the page.

They also learned how to ‘leaf rub’ using many colours to create ‘the beauty of the fall leaf colours’
