Visual and performing arts give children another language to think and express themselves. Rooted in Reggio’s Hundred Languages and IB’s belief in multiple ways of understanding, art builds creativity and whole-child growth.
PERFORMING ARTS
Performance is at the heart of the Richland music experience. Throughout the year, students showcase their learning through concerts, assemblies, celebrations of learning, musical theatre productions, community performances, festivals, and competitions. These authentic opportunities build confidence, resilience, stage presence, and a sense of accomplishment while strengthening connections within the school and the broader community.
Creative expression thrives through the arts, empowering students to explore, collaborate, and share their unique perspectives.
VISUAL ARTS
At Richland Academy, visual art isn’t a stand-alone subject. It is one of the Hundred Languages for students to think and communicate in.
In our dedicated Art Studio, our students translate what they are exploring in units of inquiry into paint, clay, wire, and print. They sculpt wire portraits of Canadian heroes while inquiring into identity. They turn a piece of music into shape and oil pastel.
Our students learn to document their creation process, because in the Reggio approach the thinking behind the art matters as much as the art itself. The result: students build real technical skill while learning to use art as a way of questioning and understanding their world.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM
In the primary years, students explore classroom percussion, Orff instruments, and ukulele, building technique, music literacy, and ensemble skills through improvisation, composition, and collaborative music-making.
In Grades 7 and 8, students can pursue jazz band, contemporary music groups, musical theatre, songwriting, and music technology, sharpening artistic expression and technical skill across styles. Digital tools are woven throughout, giving students authentic experience composing, recording, and producing original music.
BILINGUAL CHOIR
Students in Grades 4 to 8 have the opportunity to participate in our school choir, where they strengthen their vocal skills, musicality, and confidence while performing at school events and in the wider community.
