Middle Years Programme (MYP)

The MYP (Middle Years Programme) is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. It comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.

“Every question, challenge, and discovery helps students grow into thoughtful individuals who understand themselves and the world around them.”

A SMOOTH TRANSITION INTO SENIOR SCHOOL

In the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), students in Grade 9 begin earning credits toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) while continuing to learn within the MYP framework.

MYP learning is built around meaningful connections. A key concept introduces the broad idea students will explore, while the global context connects that idea to real life and helps students understand why it matters. Through interdisciplinary learning, students draw on knowledge and skills from different subjects to investigate the idea from multiple perspectives.

Together, these elements help students move beyond isolated facts. They learn to connect ideas, transfer their understanding between subjects, and apply their learning to complex questions and real-world challenges.

THE MYP EXPERIENCE INCLUDES:

INTERDISCIPLINARY LEARNING

In the Middle Years Programme (MYP), interdisciplinary learning supports students to understand bodies of knowledge from two or more disciplines or subject groups, in order to integrate them and create new understanding.

For example, students may use science and design to create an environmentally responsible solution, or combine history and language to examine how stories influence our understanding of the past.

COMMUNITY PROJECT GRADE 8

The Community Project gives students an opportunity to identify a need within a community and respond through purposeful action. Working independently or collaboratively, students investigate an issue, plan a course of action and reflect on the difference their efforts have made. The project strengthens teamwork, communication and social responsibility by showing students how their learning can contribute to others.

PERSONAL PROJECT GRADE 10

The Personal Project is an independent, long-term learning experience completed in the final year of the MYP. Students choose an area that genuinely interests them, establish a goal, conduct research and create a product or outcome. Throughout the process, they document their decisions, challenges and progress before evaluating both the final result and their development as learners. The project brings together the research, thinking, communication and self-management skills developed throughout the MYP.
